Rembrandt, van Rijn

Rembrandt, van Rijn
(1606–69)
Dutch artist. Born in Leiden, Holland, Rembrandt lived in Amsterdam close to the Jewish quarter. This and the fact that he had several Jewish friends have led to persistent but unfounded rumours that he himself was a Jew. However, a number of his works had Jewish themes, particularly such major paintings as Scene in the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam and The Jewish Bride, and many sketches of old Jews. He did an etching of MANASSEH BEN-ISRAEL in 1636 and may have used him for a model in his painting Rabbi of Amsterdam. Rembrandt had several Jewish patrons, and he may have been acquainted with SPINOZA.
